What managed IT support covers
Managed IT support is a fixed-fee arrangement where a technology partner handles the day-to-day running of your business technology. For most South African SMEs, this replaces the cost of a full-time IT employee with a team of specialists at a fraction of the salary.
A comprehensive managed IT support contract typically covers:
- Remote helpdesk — phone, email and remote-desktop support for staff queries and software issues
- Proactive monitoring — automated alerts for hardware failures, disk space, network outages and security threats before they become emergencies
- Security patch management — automatic deployment of Windows, macOS and software updates to close vulnerabilities
- Antivirus and endpoint protection — managed antivirus, EDR (endpoint detection and response), and threat alerts
- Email and Microsoft 365 administration — mailbox setup, password resets, licence management and spam filtering
- Backup monitoring — verifying that backups complete successfully and that data is recoverable
- Network management — router, switch and Wi-Fi configuration and monitoring for connectivity and performance
On-site visits for hardware failures, network cabling, printer setup and physical security are included on higher tiers or available as add-ons on entry plans.
Remote vs on-site support in South Africa
The majority of IT issues — password resets, software errors, email problems, slow performance — can be resolved remotely in under 30 minutes. Remote support is faster than waiting for an engineer to travel to your premises and is included at all support tiers.
On-site support remains essential for physical hardware (a laptop that won't power on, a server that needs replacing, network cabling in a new office) and for situations where remote access is not possible (a machine that can't connect to the internet, a physical security issue). M.Y Tech Guys provides on-site visits across Mpumalanga, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, typically scheduled within 24 hours for Silver and Gold clients.
80% of IT issues are resolved remotely. For most businesses, the primary value of managed support is fast remote resolution — not the on-site visits. A well-monitored environment catches problems before they escalate to the point where a visit is required.
What South African SMEs need from IT support
South African businesses face IT challenges that are often more acute than those in other markets. Load shedding creates additional hardware stress and introduces power spike risk. Remote and hybrid work has expanded the attack surface for cybercriminals. POPIA compliance requires documented controls over how personal data is processed, stored and protected.
Effective IT support for a South African SME must therefore address:
- Load shedding resilience — UPS devices, surge protection, and cloud-first systems that keep running when power goes out
- Cybersecurity — ransomware protection, email security (phishing is the leading cause of breaches in SA), multi-factor authentication, and incident response procedures
- POPIA compliance — access controls, audit logs, data retention policies and breach notification procedures
- Local software compatibility — Sage Pastel, SimplePay, Xero, SARS eFiling integration and South African business applications
- Connectivity management — fibre, LTE failover, and VPN configuration for remote staff
IT support pricing in South Africa
Managed IT support in South Africa is priced either per user, per device, or as a flat monthly fee. M.Y Tech Guys uses flat monthly tiers so your IT cost is predictable regardless of how many support calls your team makes in a month.
R2,500/month
Bronze — Essentials. Remote helpdesk, security monitoring, backup verification, Microsoft 365 administration. Up to 5 users. Response within 4 business hours.
R6,500/month
Silver — Full managed. Everything in Bronze plus priority remote support (2-hour response), monthly on-site visit, network monitoring, endpoint security, and a monthly IT health report. Up to 15 users.
R15,000/month
Gold — Enterprise managed. Everything in Silver plus a dedicated account manager, unlimited on-site visits, hardware procurement management, strategic IT planning, and POPIA compliance documentation support. Unlimited users.

Critical issues are escalated immediately. Standard issues: 4-hour response on Bronze, 2-hour response on Silver and Gold. On-site visits within 24 hours for Silver and Gold clients.
Do you support both Windows and Mac?
Yes. We support Windows 10, 11 and Server, macOS, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and most line-of-business software used by South African SMEs including Sage, QuickBooks and Xero.
What is the cost of IT support in South Africa?
